Welcome First Grade Families! I am so excited to have your child in my class. I hope the following information will answer some of your questions.
Homework:
Homework will go home each Monday and will be due on Fridays. The purpose of homework is to reinforce skills being taught in class.
Homework will include:
Homework/Classwork Folder:
The homework/classwork folder will include weekly homework, finished work, special announcements and other classroom information.
This folder will go home on Monday afternoons. Please return on Friday mornings so that we can fill it for the following week.
Early/Late Reading:
Early/Late reading allows us to target key learning areas with a smaller group of students to become more fluent readers. Since the decision to place students as early or late readers is based on the academic needs of the children, I cannot honor specific requests. Please understand that I will place your child in the best learning environment for his/her needs.
Slip reading will begin on Monday, August 28th.
Early readers: 8:40 – 2:05
Late readers: 9:30 – 3:05
Wednesday schedule for all students: 8:40 – 2:05
Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
Early Reader Dismissal:
Students will be brought to the courtyard located between the Multi Purpose Room and the school office at 2:05pm. Due to the afternoon recess, the gate will be locked during dismissal time. Any students not picked up on time, will be taken to the office where you would pick up your child. In the event of rainy weather, we will use either the overhangs in the courtyard or the Multi Purpose Room for dismissal. If your child goes to Kids' Country, he/she will use the playground route as has been the case up to this point. If you have other arrangements for how you would like your child to be dismissed, please let your teacher know so this can be passed on to the staff supervision.
Late Reader Arrival:
Students will wait outside the double gate next to the TK playground with parent supervision. The gate will be unlocked at 9:30am. Students will walk to their classrooms, while parents stay outside the gated area. Students who arrive after the gate is locked, will need to go through the front office and obtain a tardy slip. Kids' Country students will be dismissed from the facility and will go directly to their classroom.
Book Bags
Students will be provided with Reading bags to use at school and at home. It is very important that your child returns the book bag each day so that he/she can bring home new books. Many of the books that your child will bring home will be books at their level that they have been practicing in class.
Snack and Recess:
First Graders will have a morning recess at 10:25 – 10:40. You may send a small, nutritious snack for your child to eat prior to recess. Please pack this snack separately from your child’s lunch and label it clearly. No NUTS or NUT PRODUCTS in our classroom.
Lunch and Recess:
Students have lunch and a second recess from 11:40 – 12:25. Please make sure your child knows if they should buy lunch that day. If your child is buying lunch, you can leave a check in the office to be added to your child’s lunch ticket or you can add money online.
Field Trips:
First Grade will attend about 2 - 3 fieldtrips during the school year. We will let you know as soon as these dates are finalized.
Birthdays:
We will celebrate birthdays in our classroom. We will sing a special song and your child will get a prize on his/her birthday. If you would like to send in a nonedible treat such as a pencil or eraser for each child, your child can pass it around to the students at the end of the day. Please do not bring a food item to share as we have many allergies in our class.
